Prayer Before Surgery

For the anxious heart facing an operation. Place yourself, your body, and your doctors in the hands of the Great Physician.

Father, I am afraid. I am sitting here in a hospital gown with a bracelet on my wrist and a knot in my stomach, and I am afraid. I am afraid of the anesthesia, afraid of the scalpel, afraid of what they will find, afraid of what could go wrong. I am afraid of not waking up. And I need You to meet me in this fear because I cannot white-knuckle my way through it alone.

You know my body better than any surgeon. You formed every organ, every vessel, every nerve ending. You knit me together in my mother’s womb and You declared that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. This body that is about to be opened up — it is not just tissue and bone. It is Your craftsmanship. And I am asking You to be in that operating room, guiding every cut, every stitch, every decision.

Steady the hands of my surgeon, Lord. Sharpen their mind. Give them clarity and focus. Let their years of training be anointed by Your wisdom. Surround them with a team that is attentive, that catches what needs to be caught, that works together with precision. And even though they may not know You, use them as instruments of Your healing.

Be with the nurses who will care for me — before, during, and after. Give them gentleness and competence. Let me feel safe in their hands. And if there are decisions to be made in the moment, decisions I cannot make for myself while I am under anesthesia, Lord, You make them. Whisper into the ears of the people responsible for my life.

And Father, I lift up the people in the waiting room. My family, my friends, the people who love me and are sitting in uncomfortable chairs, staring at the clock, trying not to imagine the worst. Give them peace. The same peace I am asking for myself — pour it over them like a blanket. Let them feel Your presence in that waiting room. Let them know that You have me in Your hands.

When I wake up — and Lord, I believe I will wake up — let the first thing I feel be Your presence. Let recovery be smooth. Let my body heal the way You designed it to heal. And if the news after surgery is hard, give me the strength to face it with You beside me.

I am placing my body on this table, but I am placing my life in Your hands. You are the Great Physician. You were there before medicine existed, and Your power has not diminished. I trust You with this moment, this surgery, this outcome, and every day that follows.

In the name of Jesus, who healed with a touch and spoke life into the dead, I pray.

Amen.

How to pray this prayer

01

Pray before you get to the hospital

Don’t wait until the IV is in your arm. Pray the night before. Pray in the car on the way. Give yourself time to let God’s peace settle in.

02

Read it slowly, out loud

If you’re in a hospital room, whisper it. If you’re at home the night before, speak it boldly. Your voice declaring trust in God pushes back fear.

03

Make it personal

Name the specific surgery. Name the surgeon. Name the fear. Give God every detail — He is not overwhelmed by any of it.

04

Ask someone to pray with you

Before they wheel you in, ask a family member or friend to hold your hand and pray. Or call your pastor, your small group, or our prayer team.

05

Pray for the waiting room

Your loved ones are hurting too. Pray for their peace. Send them this prayer. Let them know that God is in control so they don’t have to be.
