The Bible speaks directly into the struggle of addiction. These ten passages offer hope, strength, and the promise that God’s power is greater than any chain. Let His Word anchor you in the fight.
Each scripture below is paired with a brief reflection to help you understand how it applies to the journey of recovery. Read them slowly. Let them sink in. Speak them out loud. There is power in the Word of God.
1. John 8:36
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
John 8:36This is the anchor verse for every person in recovery. Freedom is not something you earn through willpower — it is something Christ gives. “Free indeed” means completely, fully, no-chains-left free. That is what He offers you.
2. 1 Corinthians 10:13
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.”
1 Corinthians 10:13You are not alone in this fight. The craving that feels unbearable — God has set a limit on it. He always provides a way out. Your job is to look for the exit door He opens.
3. Philippians 4:13
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:13Not through your own strength. Not through sheer determination. Through Him. When you feel like you cannot make it through another day, this verse reminds you that His strength is available to you right now.
4. 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17Your past does not define your future. In Christ, you are not the person you were yesterday. The old identity — the addict, the failure, the broken one — is gone. God is making you new.
5. Isaiah 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.”
Isaiah 41:10Fear is one of addiction’s greatest weapons. Fear of failure. Fear of withdrawal. Fear that you’ll never be normal again. God says: do not fear. He is with you. He will help you.
6. Romans 8:1
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1Shame keeps people locked in the cycle. But God does not condemn you. He convicts, He corrects, He calls you forward — but He never condemns. Let that sink in: there is no condemnation for you.
7. Psalm 34:17-18
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”
Psalm 34:17-18God is not distant. He is close. Especially when you are broken. Your cry for help does not fall on deaf ears — He hears it and He responds.
8. Luke 4:18
“He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.”
Luke 4:18Jesus’ mission statement includes you. Freedom for the prisoners. Recovery for those who cannot see clearly. Liberation for the oppressed. This is why He came.
9. Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11Addiction tells you there is no future worth living for. God says the opposite. He has plans for you — good plans, hopeful plans, plans that extend beyond the darkness of this season.
10. Psalm 107:13-14
“Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.”
Psalm 107:13-14This is the promise: cry out to God, and He saves. He brings you out of darkness. He breaks the chains. Not might. Not could. He does.
