When someone you love is trapped in addiction, the helplessness can feel overwhelming. You’ve tried talking. You’ve tried ultimatums. You’ve tried pretending it isn’t happening. Nothing works. But there is something that reaches where your hands cannot — prayer.
These seven prayers are written for the moments when your heart is too heavy to find the words on your own. Each one is rooted in Scripture, and each one is designed to bring a specific area of the battle before God’s throne.
1. A Prayer for Deliverance
Father, I bring my loved one before You today. You see the chains that bind them — chains they cannot break on their own. I ask You, in the name of Jesus, to deliver them. Break the power of addiction over their body, their mind, and their spirit. Set them free, Lord, the way only You can.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
John 8:362. A Prayer for Strength to Endure
Lord, give my loved one the strength to resist the cravings that overwhelm them. When every part of their body screams for relief, be their relief. When the temptation feels like a flood, be the wall that holds. Remind them that Your power is made perfect in weakness.
“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:133. A Prayer for Healing
Great Physician, heal the damage that addiction has done. Heal their body from the toxins. Heal their mind from the fog and darkness. Heal their emotions from the shame and self-hatred. You formed them in the womb and You can restore what has been broken.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:34. A Prayer for Protection
Father, put a hedge of protection around my loved one. Keep them from the people, the places, and the situations that trigger relapse. Guard them from the enemy who wants to keep them in bondage. Station Your angels around them and keep them safe.
5. A Prayer for Their Family
Lord, we are hurting too. The family is fraying at the edges. Give us the patience to keep loving when love feels impossible. Protect our children from the chaos. Heal the wounds we’ve inflicted on each other. Hold our family together when we don’t have the strength to hold on ourselves.
6. A Prayer for Wisdom
God, give us wisdom to know the difference between helping and enabling. Show us when to speak and when to be silent. Guide the doctors, the counselors, and every person involved in their recovery. Let every decision be led by Your Spirit, not by our fear.
7. A Prayer of Surrender
Father, I surrender this person I love into Your hands. I cannot fix them. I cannot save them. Only You can. I release the outcome to You. I trust Your timeline. I trust Your plan. And I choose to believe that You are working even when I cannot see it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
