Prayer for Addiction Recovery

A prayer for freedom from alcohol, drugs, and every chain that holds you captive. God's power is greater.

Heavenly Father, I come before You broken. I come with nothing to offer but the mess I've made and the honest confession that I cannot do this on my own. You already know the weight I carry — the shame of another morning waking up with regret, the promises I've broken, the people I've hurt, the person I've become that I never wanted to be.

Lord, I am tired. I am tired of the cycle. I am tired of saying "never again" and meaning it with everything in me, only to find myself back in the same place by nightfall. I am tired of watching the people I love lose trust in me. I am tired of losing myself.

But I believe — even now, even here, even with trembling hands and a fractured heart — that You are greater than this thing that has its grip on me. Your Word says that whom the Son sets free is free indeed. I am asking You, Jesus, to set me free. Not tomorrow. Not someday. Today.

Break every chain. Break the cravings that overtake my body. Break the lies that tell me I need this to survive, to cope, to feel normal. Break the darkness that whispers I'm too far gone, that I've tried too many times, that I don't deserve freedom. Those are not Your words, Father. Your words say I am loved. Your words say I am worth fighting for. Your words say nothing is impossible with You.

Give me the strength I do not have. When my hands shake and my mind screams for relief, be my relief. When the craving comes like a flood, be the wall that holds. When I want to give up, remind me that You never gave up on me — not once, not ever.

Heal what addiction has stolen from me. Heal my body from the damage I've done. Heal my mind from the fog and the darkness. Heal my relationships with the people who have every right to walk away but haven't yet. And for those who have walked away — Lord, in Your time, restore what the locusts have eaten.

I surrender this fight to You. I cannot white-knuckle my way to freedom. I need a power that is not my own. I need the same power that raised Jesus from the dead to raise me from this grave I've been lying in. I believe You can do it, Father. I believe You will do it. Not because I deserve it, but because You are merciful, and You are good, and You love me even now.

In the name of Jesus Christ, who came to set the captives free, I pray.

Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

1

Find a quiet place

Shut the door. Turn off your phone. This is between you and God. He doesn't need a performance — He needs your honesty.

2

Read it slowly, out loud

There is power in speaking these words. Don't rush. Let each sentence settle in your heart. If a line makes you cry, stay there. That's the Holy Spirit working.

3

Make it personal

Add your own words. Insert your name, your story, your specific struggle. God doesn't want a recitation — He wants a conversation with you.

4

Pray it daily

Freedom rarely comes all at once. Pray this prayer every morning for 30 days. Consistency in prayer builds a fortress around your heart.

5

Don't pray alone

Share this with someone you trust. Ask them to pray with you. And if you need a prayer team in your corner, request free prayer here.
